Massachusetts Launches International Stem Cell Database

September 12, 2008 by Administrator

Stem CellsMassachusetts will be home to an international stem cell registry. The announcement is one part of the one-billion-dollar life sciences initiative advocated for by Governor Deval Patrick is approaching reality.

“The International Stem Cell Registry will provide important information for stem cell research that will lead to cures for illnesses, a stronger economy and good jobs at good wages in every region of the Commonwealth,” Governor Patrick said in a statement.

Though the database is still evolving, it will ultimately provide a searchable and comprehensive catalog of published and validated unpublished information on every human embryonic stem cell line derived to date.

State officials say researchers can use the information to inform their scientific studies, and patients can use the website to gain information about stem cell advances that may benefit them, and doctors can stay current on information relevant to their patients.

The International Stem Cell Registry is a joint project between the UMass Medical School and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center and it has received a $570,000 state grant to get started.
