RMV: No More Renewal Notices
November 13, 2008 by Administrator
The Registry of Motor Vehicles – hit hard recently by budget cuts – is eliminating a courtesy it has extended to drivers for many years.
The home page of the Registry of Motor Vehicles web site says it succinctly:
The RMV will eliminate courtesy notices that are sent to customers for the following services:
The list goes on to include routine notices for license renewal, vehicle inspection reminders and driver’s education certificates. There are several other categories that won’t receive notice anymore.
The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports,
Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian said relying on drivers to check their own licenses and renew them every five years before they expire — without a notice from the Registry — will save the agency $600,000 annually.
The license renewal reminder is one of the “courtesy” notices about pending renewals that will be dropped to meet recent state budget cuts announced by Gov. Deval L. Patrick.
Kaprielian went on to say she is confident Massachusetts drivers have enough common sense to look at their license, identify the expiration date, and renew it on their own.
Apparently she hasn’t driven on the road with Massachusetts drivers if she is willing to come to that conclusion.
